Edited by Cheryl Chung, Vieshaalan Naidu, and Aaron Maniam
Contributors to the 2019 edition of The Birthday Book reflect on the narratives of their lives: the stories that define them, their communities, the causes they champion, and Singapore’s collective future. The 54 essays in the book are diverse; some touch on deeply personal issues while others tackle broader trends. Yet in the deeply personal we find the seeds of more universal issues, while in the trends we can discern the outlines of more individualised stories. Like the Singapore that each essay celebrates, this book dances between micro and macro worlds.
About The Birthday Book
The Birthday Book is an annual publication, started in 2016, dedicated as a birthday gift for Singapore. It comprises a collection of essays from contributors in vastly differing fields, from entrepreneurs to academics, civil servants to comedians, scientists to artists. Each year, the contributors pen their responses to a given prompt, detailing how their experiences in their backgrounds highlight crucial but real social concerns that the nation has to tackle presently and in the future. It is our hope that the concerns raised in each edition of The Birthday Book will continue to spur Singaporeans on to think about how they can contribute and make a difference in the ever-changing political, economic and social landscape of Singapore.
